Site Visits

There are site visits on the Wednesday 15th August to:

Laverton North Power Station

Snowy Hydro Limited owns and operates a 320 MW gas fired power station at Laverton North, Victoria. Even though some parts of the works are still to achieve practical completion, the station was commissioned in December 2006 to assist Victoria in meeting its current growth in peak electricity demand.

The Laverton North Power Station will assist Snowy Hydro Limited in meeting the needs of its customers in the National Electricity Market and will significantly enhanceSnowy Hydro's existing generating capacity of over 4,000 MW.

The station comprises two open cycle gas turbines fuelled by gas supplied via the Brooklyn-Lara gas pipeline. In the event of a gas supply curtailment, the station can be operated on low sulphur emission distillate backup fuel.

The station will normally be operated remotely from Snowy Hydro Limited's central control room in Cooma, NSW, but will also be equipped with full local control.

Australian Synchrotron Project

The synchrotron is the largest scientific infrastructure project in Victoria ever ($200 million), and is second only to the ANSTO neutron beam facility at Lucas Heights as the largest in Australia.

In short, the Synchrotron is an electron beam accelerator (the electrons are accelerated to close to the speed of light), which produces high intensity photons from Xray to IR when the electron beam changes direction. These photons are then used to probe the fundamental structure of materials, determining such things as drug development, new materials research, protein molecule morphology and even medical therapies. There are only about 40 such machines on the planet.

The machine is now running with 4-5 beamlines in operation (up to 40 are possible in the future) and real science is about to begin. Delegates who come will be some of the first engineers in the power industry to see it in action.

The schedule is as follows:

8:30am Meet at Hilton
9:00am Bus Departs for Laverton North Power Station
9:30am Arrive at the Power Station
11:30am Depart Laverton
12:00pm Arrive at La Porchetta in Williamstown
1:00pm Depart Williamstown
2:00pm Arrive at the Synchrotron
4:00pm Depart the Synchrotron
5:00pm  Arrive at the Hilton

Partners Program

Dear Partners,

Hello and welcome to the EESA National Conference. I’d like to extend a special invitation to you to start the day off at the Partners Breakfast.

It is not all about engineering! Each morning of the conference we are holding a complimentary Partners Breakfast. The aim of the breakfast is to meet other partners and join together with others of similar  interests to enjoy some of highlights of Melbourne. I have been to Melbourne many times and I am always impressed by the art galleries, markets, department stores, cafes, etc. I look forward to seeing you in Melbourne.
