Practical Quality Heat Treatment

Heat treatment is an essential part of most metal processing operations but many users, specifiers and operators do not have a good understanding of the processes on which proper heat treatment depends. This Practical Heat Treatment course explains the basic processes and equipment used in heat treatment and the materials commonly treated by such processes.

Failure Analysis

The programme has been designed to give participants a specific exposure to the application of modern failure analysis methodologies. In today's diverse world of materials and industrial technologies, the art of failure analysis has become more and more complex. One of Australia's experts in this field will be running this two-day course.

Materials Selection for Wear

This practical course presents a systematic approach to wear and the processes of materials evaluation and selection, which will minimise wear, control costs and improve reliability. It is designed for those working in heavy industry, the mining and petrochemical sectors, for those who work with agricultural machinery and also those in mineral extraction and processing. The course assumes some basic materials knowledge but is suitable for engineers, technicians and managers who need to update their knowledge in this practical area of engineering.

Basic Metallurgy

This two day training course will provide participants with an appreciation of the nature of metals as used in engineering fabrication and construction and an introduction to the principles of physical metallurgy. The course will explore the metallurgy, alloying, processing, heat treatment and mechanical properties of plain carbon and alloy steels, stainless steels, and common alloys of the non-ferrous metals aluminium and copper. Such training will assist participants in relating service performance to the metallurgy of common engineering materials steels to aid in the selection of the most appropriate material for a particular engineering application.

Welding Metallurgy

Welding is one of the most common engineering joining processes in use today. The joining of materials may occur by fusion or in the solid state although the most common process is fusion welding generally of carbon or low alloy steels. Welding has evolved over the last decades from an empirical art to a process where weldability is well understood. This course aims to explain welding practices, precautions and rules in terms of metallurgical principles. The outcome is an understanding to allow practical trouble-shooting, and a reasoned choice of alternatives if conventional methods cannot be used.

Inspection and Testing

During manufacture and assembly of products, there is a wide range of testing and inspection carried out to ensure the materials and items satisfy their specifications or are fit for the required purpose. Routine testing is often in-house and it is vital that the limits of the test methods are known and the meaning of the results are understood. The same understanding is needed when interpreting specifications for quotations or when assessing test results supplied by others. This seminar details the material property tests most frequently required and then describes the major NDT (or NDE or NDI) inspection techniques carried out to increase your understanding of the techniques used and, their area of application and limitations.
