Australian Steel Institute News Release
16-March-2018
The Australia Steel Institute (ASI) congratulates the WA Government on its Western Australian Jobs Bill 2017 and the introduction of the Western Australian
Industry Participation Strategy (WAIPS).
This is an important milestone in ensuring local participation and the Government’s commitment to:
• Promoting consistency in procurement across agencies.
• Engaging with the market to ensure WA SMEs to have greater success in securing local contracts.
• Maintaining its focus on the application of Australian standards and specifications within the designs for State projects.
ASI Chief Executive, Tony Dixon, said “The WA Jobs Bill is a real boost for the Australian steel industry representing opportunity to increase industry participation and particularly the use of compliant, high quality Australian steel.
The ASI recognises and acknowledges the work of the WA Government and the JTSI in supporting Australian steel and quality steel, local businesses and local jobs and its ongoing support of the Steelwork Fabrication and Erection Standard for Australia AS/NZS 5131.
This important standard defines good practice for fabrication and erection of structural steelwork for projects in Australia, using a risk-based fit-for-purpose approach.
The ASI and its members look forward to continuing working with the WA Government, and in collaboration with local industry, to deliver great infrastructure,
construction and other projects for the State”.
