9am - 5pm

This one-day course is designed to provide the knowledge to bridge the gap between theory and practice of wear materials. This course presents an introduction into the broad field of wear materials and testing for those who are new to the field or those who want an update. It is also designed for technicians with the pre-requisites and those interested in understanding how knowledge of wear mechanisms and materials can lead to better productivity. Types of wear will be explained with a focus on the structure and properties of materials, with many case histories of wear parts and options for wear minimisation highlighted throughout the course.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

  • Engineers who are new to the wear materials sector or for those wanting an update of their knowledge.
  • Site based personnel who repair, maintain and operate equipment having various wear components, such as chutes, pumps, pipes, crushers, mobile plant, etc.
  • Suppliers and manufacturers of wear materials and associated equipment wanting an enhanced understanding for the applications their product will be used
  • Component Designers
  • Individuals and other industry professionals who wish to know more about wear materials and have:
    - Some understanding of elements of metallurgy;
    - Some experience in the degradation of materials;
    - Experience in mechanical testing of metals;
    - Experience in the design and testing of engineering components.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand the key wear mechanisms existing in industry and how to identify them;
  • The application of the common engineering wear materials for industrial components;
  • Organise and run a systematic wear failure investigation;
  • Determine what wear testing should be done to determine the best material options for any application;
  • Make recommendations on materials or design changes that could help prevent future wear failures.

To enhance this experience course attendees are encouraged to bring along examples or descriptions of some recent wear failures they may have been involved in.

PRESENTER

Paul Huggett has worked in research, manufacturing, and site based applications engineering for wear materials and related equipment for the past 30+ years.Currently the Principal Scientist and Materials Manager for Applus+, he continues to provide technology development and support to various manufacturing companies and end users.Previously he has developed unique manufacturing technologies for composite wear materials and has published several technical papers on various aspects of wear.
