These research facilities provide the link between excellence in research capacity and research excellence. The Sydney Manufacturing Hub (SMH) is the University’s newest core research facility and will provide outstanding research capability in the area of materials processing and, in particular, additive manufacturing.

The Chief Engineer, Sydney Manufacturing Hub manages the research operations within SMH, coordinating the laboratory capabilities and technical staff of the SMH facilities. Under the broad direction of the Academic Director, the position ensures the SMH research facilities meet the needs of the researchers and are aligned to the University’s research objectives. The Chief Engineer implements measures to minimise excess costs associated with running the SMH facilities while ensuring that facilities provide high quality, professional laboratory services to meet the research and operational needs of the core research facility.


About you

This role requires initiative and capability for both independent decision-making as well as sound judgment on when consultation is required with respect to decisions. The successful candidate will use their judgement to ensure the SMH is compliant with governance and controls, and to mitigate risks. Your considerable experience, acumen and problem-solving expertise will demonstrate your capacity to make decisions and recommendations on broad and complex issues which impact on the operations of the SMH.

The successful candidate will hold an academic graduate or postgraduate degree in engineering, or a related discipline, or significant matching experience in a related field. You will have a demonstrated high-level of leadership, interpersonal communication, and managerial skills, as would be appropriate in a highly motivated team, and commitment to, and capability for managing, continuous operational improvement. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with additive manufacturing technologies. Knowledge and experience with 3D metal printing, the related workflows and their associated technologies will be well regarded. Ideally, candidates will have experience with the software for design and optimisation of manufactured components and processes.


Term and remuneration

The position of Chief Engineer, Sydney Manufacturing Hub is a HEO10 professional role and will be offered as a full-time fixed-term appointment for 3 years, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.

The selected candidate will be offered a competitive remuneration package of currently $133K base salary plus leave loading and a generous employer’s contribution to superannuation.
