Tertiary Institutions

Australia is home to some of the world’s leading materials science and engineering universities and research centres. Undergraduate activities in the areas of materials science are usually part of the metallurgy, chemical, minerals and materials engineering faculty.

Materials science research at Australian tertiary institutions has significantly contributed to advances in the production and design of the space shuttle and the jet aeroplane; the laptop computer and the iPod; artificial hips, contact lenses and the bionic ear; improved golf clubs and tennis rackets; and even levitating trains.

Current research is tackling the development of new generation engineering materials, smart functional materials and advanced manufacturing technologies, including nanofabrication.
